“In 1961, Dwight Eisenhower famously identified the military-industrial complex, warning that the growing fusion between corporations and the armed forces posed a threat to democracy. Judged 50 years later, Ike’s frightening prophecy actually understates the scope of our modern system—and the dangers of the perpetual march to war it has put us on.”
From The Atlantic: “The Tyranny of Defense Inc.” by Andrew Bacevich
I highly recommend this article as timely for the debate that will be taking place this year about our national security policies and funding. Our past comments on this “Rethinking National Security” blog have been running along similar lines. We hope to add new posts to focus on the specifics of our defense funding choices and the problem of often wrong headed moves and pressures we are seeing in Congress, in our myopic media, and from industry, etc. The Bacevich’s eloquent article is a real service and wake up call.
